FAQ's
What is grounding or earthing?
Electrically grounding the human body to the earth provides a connection to the earth’s natural supply of electrons.
With more than 20 medical studies published on the topic, it has been proven that when we are grounded, electrons flow freely into the body. And the earth’s electrons are powerful in fighting inflammation.
These electrons have a negative charge and flow into our bodies and "match up" with free radicals, which have a positive charge. When the electrons have matched up with free radicals, they are then flushed from our systems naturally. Free radicals arise through natural cycles in our bodies, aging and response to injury or illness.
If free radicals do not have an available electron present, they will poach an electron from a healthy cell. This creates more damage, more free radicals, and the cycle continues.
When you connect a grounding mat or strap to a grounded outlet and put bare skin on it, your body is flooded with electrons. The biggest benefit is that inflammation in the body will begin to get processed in a way that doesn't cause further damage to healthy cells.
Your body is grounded when you are walking barefoot on the grass outdoors or swimming in a natural source of water. Using a grounding mat or strap uses the grounding system in your house’s electrical system as a big extension cord to connect you to the earth beneath you.
What are the benefits of grounding?
Electrically grounding the human body to the earth creates a steady flow of electrons which are extremely powerful at reducing inflammation.
Of the studies published on grounding, several benefits are stated. A summary published in Journal of Environmental and Public Health states, “Grounding appears to improve sleep, normalize the day–night cortisol rhythm, reduce pain, reduce stress, shift the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic toward parasympathetic activation, increase heart rate variability, speed wound healing, and reduce blood viscosity.” And all this occurs while you sleep or relax!
The most common benefits we hear are improved sleep, faster recovery from wounds, workouts and illness, reduced pain and a favorite recent comment, “my teenage daughter’s mood has improved.”
How do I set the sleeping mat up?
Set up is simple. Confirm your outlet is grounded with the outlet checker (provided with your sleeping mat kit) and plug the cord in. Place the mat across the bottom portion of your bed, attach the cord and tuck the extra fabric in. Tucking the cord under your mattress will prevent you from accidentally kicking the cord off in your sleep. Feet have lots of nerve endings and since they and your calves are typically bare when you sleep, we suggest placing the mat at the bottom of your bed to start. All that is required is for bare skin to come in contact with the mat.
Can I wear socks?
If you prefer wearing socks to bed, we recommend that you wear cotton which becomes conductive if there is enough moisture in it to create a connection. If your calves touch the mat, that works well. People that report normally having cold feet often feel them warm up quickly after they contact the grounding mat. This is due to the improvement in circulation that grounding offers.
Can I plug this into an extension cord?
Yes! You can plug the grounding mat into a three-prong extension cord that is plugged into a grounded outlet. Simply use the tester provided to assure the extension cord, and outlet it is plugged into, is a grounded outlet. You will see the two yellow lights light up to confirm the outlet is grounded. If you do not get this confirmation, move the cord to a new outlet until you get confirmation.
Can I place the mat on a different part of my bed?
Yes! People also have also reported liking the mat placed near their midsection to help with low back and hip pain. The electrons will flood your entire system, so your body gets the benefits no matter where you place the mat, as long as you have bare skin touching it. You could wrap up in the mat and take a nap on your couch. As long as you connect the mat to a grounded outlet and have skin in contact with it, it will work.
Should the mat be unplugged when it's not in use?
No, you can leave the cord to your grounding mat connected to the outlet as long as you like. The mat isn't connected to electricity, only to your home’s grounding wire, so there is no risk in leaving it plugged in all the time whether you are using it or not.
Do I need to sleep naked on it?
Only if you want to. Sleeping grounded only requires some amount of exposed skin to be in contact with the grounding mat for you to get the benefits of being grounded. Most people find that sleeping with their bare feet or calves in contact with the mat to be enough.
What if I don't feel anything?
Feeling nothing is totally normal. You are still getting all the benefits of sleeping grounded. Some people don’t notice anything when they're in contact with the grounding mat. Some people feel sensations such as a relaxing tingling, but even If you feel nothing you still get all the benefits.
How long should I use the grounding mat?
Our bodies are designed to be in contact with the earth 24 hours a day. Sleep grounded as often as possible and stay in contact with the grounding mat as long as you can while you're in bed or or whenever it's convenient.
Why are my feet getting warm?
Studies have shown that grounding improves circulation. When you sleep grounded, the improved circulation will help warm your feet.
Should I ease into using this product?
If you are on medication or recovering from a serious illness such as Lyme's Disease, consult with your doctor. Some people have seen a need to reduce medication dosage, so pay attention to how you feel and share this with your doctor.
Since our bodies were designed to be in contact with the earth, most people will not need to ease into sleeping grounded. But if you take blood thinners or thyroid medication, some people have found they need to reduce their medication over time.
Your doctor may not have heard of grounding or earthing so you may want to direct them to this website or the Earthing Institute's website. Grounding is as safe as walking barefoot outdoors, however, if you have a challenging health condition, talk to your doctor, ease into things and pay attention to how you feel.
What if I spill water on the mat?
The grounding mat is completely washable so spilling anything on it is not to be of concern. The mat is only connected to your home’s ground wire, not to the electrical system of your home so there's no power flowing through the mat. Getting the mat wet does not create a safety risk.
Can I wash the mat?
Yes! The grounding mat is fully washable. Remove the cord and throw the mat in with your regular laundry. Wash it at a cool temperature and dry it on low. You can iron it if you like, also. It's a very durable fabric.
Is this like an electric blanket?
No, an electric blanket draws electrical current through wires in the blanket that will then heat up. The grounding mat is only connected to your home’s ground wire, not to the electrical system, so it does not draw any current through it.
Can I use this with an electric blanket or magnetic pad?
Yes, as long as the electric blanket or pad are in good working condition and do not have any electrical shorts, or damage to the cord sets. You can use the grounding mat with any blanket, heating pad or magnetic pad that you like.
