How to Care for Your Grounding Mat (Without Shortening Its Life)

Written By Angela Knox On

If you’ve invested in a grounding mat, you want it to last. After all, the whole point of grounding is to bring a calm, steady connection into your life.

With the right materials and a little care, your grounding mat can support you for years and years. Here’s what you need to know about cleaning, materials, and everyday use.

Why Silver Mats Wear Out Faster

Many grounding mats on the market use silver thread as the conductive material. Silver does conduct electricity, but it comes with big downsides:

  1. It tarnishes quickly when exposed to moisture, air, or detergents.

  2. It loses conductivity over time, which means the mat may stop working even if it looks fine.

  3. It requires special care, including fast drying after washing.

That’s why people often find that silver mats have a much shorter lifespan.

Why We Use Stainless Steel

All of our mats at Well Grounded Home use a stainless steel thread blend, 22% stainless steel woven directly into cotton and polyester fabric. Here’s why:

  1. It doesn’t tarnish. Moisture, air, or detergent won’t break it down.

  2. It’s durable. Stainless steel thread keeps working wash after wash.

  3. It’s low maintenance. Our mats and sheets can go right in with your regular laundry. Wash, dry, even iron them if you’d like. They’re hearty and built to last.

Simple Care

With stainless steel thread, care is easy:

  • Wash and dry them with your normal sheets.

  • Use gentle detergents, no need for special cleaners.

  • Expect natural wear like light pilling over time, but the conductivity remains.

And remember, for your grounding setup to work, three pieces matter:

  1. Your outlet. It has to be wired and grounded (that’s why we send a tester with every order.)

  2. The cord. Ours are USA made with a copper wire, built-in safety resistor, and grounded plug.

  3. The mat. Conductive fabric that keeps working, wash after wash.

When all three pieces are solid, you can rest grounded and confident.

Taking care of your grounding mat shouldn’t add stress to your life. That’s why it’s important to choose a product made with lasting materials.

Grounding is about simplicity, consistency, and connection. Your mat care should reflect that, too.
